Daniel Darmesin Flanagan, violin, and Dustin Budish, viola, join Reno’s master luthier Tim Dodd to present “A Viola is not a Violin

For this event, inspired by the TCMS musical creation A Violin is a Violin?,  Tim Dodd will illustrate the construction and acoustic properties of a viola compared with a violin, while Dan and Dustin present a lively competition showcasing the  qualities of the two instruments.

Note: Children are welcome at all TCMS events!

The Artists

Daniel Darmesin Flanagan is a violinist, composer, concertmaster, and educator who has built a multifaceted career as a soloist and orchestral musician, performing concertos with orchestras in California and recitals across the United States and Europe. He currently serves as Concertmaster of the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera and West Edge Opera, teaches violin at the University of California, Berkeley, and leads the visual-art–inspired solo violin project and album The Bow and the Brush, featuring newly commissioned works for unaccompanied violin.​

Dustin Budish is a violist from Reno, Nevada, who studied at Oberlin College, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory, working with notable teachers including Jeffrey Irvine and Martha Katz. He is Principal Viola of both the Reno Philharmonic and the Reno Chamber Orchestra, has appeared as a soloist with the Reno Philharmonic in the Walton Viola Concerto, and serves on the University of Nevada, Reno faculty while conducting the Reno Youth Concert Orchestra and mentoring many award-winning young string players in the area.

Tim Dodd is a Reno, Nevada–based master luthier and owner of the Dodd Violin Shop, which has been in business for more than thirty years specializing in the making, repair, and sound adjustment of fine violins. A lifelong musician who began on accordion, piano, trumpet, and classical guitar, he is highly regarded for improving the sound and playability of instruments used by leading Reno-area violinists, with his own violins regularly played in the Reno Philharmonic and supported by apprentices in his shop.​
